With reference to your letter of the 26th ultimo regarding the deportation of a number of Chinamen to Hong Kong, I am directed by Mr. Secretary Shortt to say for the information of Mr. Secretary Churchill that the forty-nine men of whom particulars are shown in the enclosed list sailed from Birkenhead en route to Hong Kong on the 16th instant. Forty-six were placed on board s. 8. "Agamemnon" and three on board s. a. "Yangtza". The ships are due to arrive at Hong Kong on the 22nd of November and the 27th November respectively. For the purpose of identification it was arranged that each man should be in possession, on his departure, either of a Chinese Passport or Certificate of Nationality, or of a Permit issued by this Department in
lieu of a passport.
The Under Secretary of State,
COLONIAL OFFICE.
